Why Wet Belts Matter

Wet (in‑oil) belts run inside your engine oil. Over time, poor oil or long service intervals cause the belt to degrade into sludge.

  • Debris blocks the oil pickup
  • Engine starves of oil → turbo/engine failure
  • Replacement now (£350–£600) prevents repairs later (£3,000–£5,000)

FAQ

01. What is a wet belt and how is it different from a standard cambelt?

A wet belt performs the same job as a regular cambelt, keeping the engine valves and pistons perfectly synchronised, but it runs inside the engine permanently bathed in engine oil. A conventional dry cambelt sits in a sealed housing bolted to the outside of the engine block, away from oil entirely. The oil-immersed design lets manufacturers build smaller, lighter and more fuel-efficient engines, which is why it became common in modern turbocharged petrols like the Ford EcoBoost and PSA 1.2 PureTech. The trade-off is that the belt is far more sensitive to oil condition and service history.

02. How often does a wet belt need to be replaced?

Manufacturers originally published very long service intervals but widespread early failures led to major revisions. Current guidance: PSA 1.2 PureTech engines (Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroen) should be replaced by 6 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Ford EcoBoost petrol engines are typically recommended at 7 to 8 years or 80,000 miles. Ford EcoBlue diesel engines are generally quoted at around 6 years or 100,000 miles. Any gaps in service history bring those timelines forward. We check your VIN, mileage and service record and give you an honest recommendation.

03. Why does wet belt replacement cost more than a regular cambelt change?

A dry cambelt sits on the outside of the engine and can usually be accessed in 3 to 4 hours. A wet belt is inside the engine, submerged in oil. The sump must come off, the oil pickup strainer inspected and cleaned, rubber debris flushed out, gaskets resealed, and the engine refilled with fresh manufacturer-specified oil. It is a partial engine strip, not simply a belt swap. Our pricing starts from 350 pounds and includes the pickup inspection, new seals and tensioners, and fresh oil and filter.

04. Can using the wrong engine oil damage my wet belt?

Yes, and this is one of the most common causes of premature wet belt failure we see, particularly on used cars. Wet belt engines require a specific manufacturer-approved oil grade. Ford EcoBoost engines typically need oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C948-B. PSA 1.2 PureTech engines require oil meeting PSA B71 2312. Generic or incorrect oils contain additives that can cause the belt rubber to swell, soften or delaminate, often long before the mileage suggests a problem.

05. Can I keep driving if my wet belt service is overdue?

We strongly advise against it. Unlike a dry cambelt, a wet belt rarely gives any warning before it fails. It can snap suddenly without notice and when it does, the engine typically suffers catastrophic damage in the same instant: bent valves, destroyed pistons or total engine failure. If your manufacturer schedule shows the belt is due, or you have noticed a rattling or ticking noise on cold starts, treat it as urgent. Timely replacement from 350 pounds at Car City Care is far less costly than an engine rebuild after failure, which typically runs from 3,000 to 5,000 pounds or more.

06. How long does a wet belt replacement take and can I drop in on the day?

Most wet belt replacements take a full working day, typically 5 to 7 hours depending on the engine and what we find during the oil pickup inspection. We ask customers to drop off in the morning and aim to have the car ready by close of business. We do not carry out wet belt work as a walk-in. The job requires parts confirmed against your VIN before we begin. Call us or use the enquiry form to check availability.
