Dedicated kits are available for all 3 types 7 pin, Twin and 13 pin, Dedicated kits will not invalidate the manufacturer's warranty and are designed to work in harmony with your vehicles electrics, most kits require some expertise in fitting and some applications require a download to activated the towing facility.

What are tow bar electrics?

Tow bar electrics (or tow bar wiring kits) are the power connectors between the vehicle and the mechanism the vehicle is towing, whether that be a trailer, cycle carrier or caravan. Tow bar electrics allow the indicators, fog lights, tail lights and brake lights on the back of your towing counterpart to function while driving, making it safer on the roads for you to tow.

01. What types of towbar are there?

Fixed towbars are permanently fitted and the most popular choice for regular towing, available in flange or swan neck style. Detachable towbars can be removed when you are not towing, keeping the rear of your car clean and neat. We will help you choose the right type based on how often you tow, what you are towing, and what works best for your vehicle.

02. How long does towbar fitting take?

Most towbar fittings at our NW2 garage take between 1.5 to 3 hours. A fixed or swan neck towbar on a standard vehicle is typically done in 1 to 2 hours. Detachable towbars, or cars that need electronic coding, may take up to 3 hours. We will give you a clear time estimate when you book.

03. What is the difference between 7-pin and 13-pin towbar electrics?

A 7-pin socket provides the legal minimum for towing: indicators, brake lights, tail lights and a rear fog light. A 13-pin socket adds a reverse light feed, battery charging, and a permanent live supply for caravan or horsebox accessories. For trailers and bike racks, 7-pin is fine. For a caravan or horsebox built after 2008, you will need 13-pin.

04. Will fitting a towbar affect my car warranty?

No. Under UK and EC competition law, fitting a type-approved towbar cannot legally void your manufacturer warranty. If your car is within its warranty period, we recommend vehicle-specific dedicated wiring rather than a universal bypass kit. We stock both and will always advise you on the right choice before any work begins.

05. Can any car have a towbar fitted?

The vast majority of cars can take a towbar, but not all vehicles have a manufacturer-approved tow rating. Some city cars and certain electric vehicles are not designed to tow. We always check your vehicle approved towing capacity before fitting to make sure everything is correctly matched.

06. How much does towbar fitting cost?

Cost depends on your vehicle, towbar type, and wiring needed. A fixed towbar with standard electrics starts from around 350 pounds. Detachable towbars and dedicated wiring sit higher. We always give a fixed upfront price before we start. Call us or send your make and model for a quick quote.
