A cam belt (also called a timing belt) is one of the most important services your car will ever need, and one that drivers worry about most on price. Below we explain what affects the cost of a cam belt replacement, when it needs doing, and why skipping it is a false economy.
Cam belt or timing belt: what is the difference?
They are two names for the same part. The cam belt keeps the top of the engine (the camshaft) turning in perfect time with the bottom (the crankshaft), so the valves and pistons never meet. If you want the full explanation, see our guide on whether a timing belt is the same as a cam belt.
Why cam belt replacement is not optional
Unlike a metal timing chain, a rubber cam belt wears and must be replaced at a set interval. If it snaps while the engine is running, the valves and pistons collide, and on most modern engines that means bent valves, a wrecked cylinder head, and a repair bill many times higher than the belt would have cost. Replacing it on schedule is simply the cheapest way to protect the engine.
When should a cam belt be changed?
Intervals vary by manufacturer, typically between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, or every 4 to 6 years, whichever comes first. Age matters as much as mileage, because the belt perishes over time even on a low-mileage car. Always check your handbook, or ask us to look it up for your exact model.
What affects the cost?
Cam belt replacement is priced by the labour involved, which varies a lot between engines:
- Engine access: some belts are easy to reach; others need parts removed first, adding labour.
- Water pump: on many engines the water pump is driven by the cam belt, so it is sensible, and cheaper overall, to replace both together.
- Belt kit quality: we fit quality tensioners and idlers as part of the kit, not just the belt.
- Wet belts: some newer engines use a belt-in-oil (wet belt) that needs specialist replacement.
Because the figure depends on your specific engine, the right approach is a quick quote rather than a guess. Tell us your make, model and mileage and we will give you an exact price.
Warning signs your cam belt needs attention
- A rattling, ticking or high-pitched whine from the front of the engine.
- The engine becoming harder to start.
- You are approaching, or have passed, the mileage or time interval.
Do not wait for a symptom, though: many belts fail with no warning at all, which is exactly why the interval exists.
